LAURA

I don’t want to thank you
for all the beautiful things
you have given me,
but for all the painful ones
you have taken away;
not for the emptiness you have filled,
but for the burdens you have lifted from me;
not for the happy moments
we have shared,
but for staying by my side
through the painful ones.

I don’t want to thank you
for what you have done for me,
but for the fact that,
despite everything,
you still keep doing it.

LAURA

nonostante tutto
continui a farlo ancora.

Universi paralleli

PARALLEL UNIVERSES

To fill a void
with unspoken words
scattered in memories
of paths never walked.

Other lives, other loves,
other battles lost
and hollow victories.

Would it have been better?
Would I have been happier?
Or would I rather
have scratched the same paper
with the same words?

Riempire un vuoto
con le parole non dette
che ho disperso in ricordi
di cammini mai percorsi.

Altre vite, altri amori,
altre battaglie perse
e vane vittorie.

Sarebbe stato meglio?
Sarei stato più felice?
O avrei piuttosto
graffiato la stessa carta
con le stesse parole?

Preghiera di un condannato a morte

PRAYER OF A MAN CONDEMNED TO DEATH

I was born on the wrong side of life
where every sin has a cost
and every shame a master.

I tore flesh from the streets
throwing it to the dogs
in nights tainted with love.

I stole wine from women
diluting it with bitter tears
and spent it on boisterous laughter.

Do not call my name
for I have many.
Do not judge my sins
for I have not sinned enough.

You bestowed upon me free will and choice
and I did your will by doing mine,
for there is no salvation without sin
and no forgiveness without fault.

Bless, then, this knot
that tightens around my throat and heart,
and weigh not your words
for my soul is light
like the mist of this morning.

Sono nato sul lato sbagliato della vita
dove ogni peccato ha un prezzo
e ogni vergogna un padrone.

Ho strappato la carne alla strada
gettandola in pasto ai cani
nelle notti sporche di amore.

Ho rubato il vino alle donne
allungandolo di lacrime amare
e l’ho speso in risate sguaiate.

Non chiamare il mio nome
perché ne ho molti.
Non giudicare i miei peccati
perché non ne ho fatti abbastanza.

Tu mi hai donato l’arbitrio e la scelta
e io fatto la tua volontà facendo la mia,
perché non c’è salvezza senza peccato
e perdono senza colpa.

Benedici dunque questo nodo
che mi cinge la gola e il cuore,
e non pesare le parole
perché la mia anima è leggera
come la nebbia di questo mattino.
